Tirana Is the Perfect Base for Exploring Albania
Albania's capital is centrally located, making it an ideal base for day trips to ancient cities, mountain fortresses, pristine lakes, and coastal towns. Whether you have one spare day or a full week, here are the best excursions from Tirana.
1. Berat — City of a Thousand Windows (2 hours)
This UNESCO-listed Ottoman city is Albania's most photogenic destination. Explore the castle quarter where people still live within ancient walls, visit the Onufri Museum, and wander the Mangalem and Gorica quarters with their iconic stacked houses.
2. Kruja — Skanderbeg's Mountain Fortress (30 minutes)
Just 30 minutes from Tirana, Kruja is home to the castle where Albania's national hero Skanderbeg resisted the Ottoman Empire. The Skanderbeg Museum inside the castle is excellent, and the restored Old Bazaar is the best place in Albania to buy traditional crafts and souvenirs.
3. Durres — Ancient Port City (40 minutes)
Albania's second-largest city has a 2,000-year-old Roman amphitheatre, Byzantine walls, a bustling waterfront, and long sandy beaches. It's the closest beach destination to Tirana.
4. Bovilla Lake & Gamti Mountain (1 hour)
A stunning turquoise reservoir just northeast of Tirana, surrounded by mountains. The hike up Gamti Mountain (1,200m) rewards you with panoramic views over the lake. Best for active travellers who want nature without a long drive.
5. Ohrid, North Macedonia (3 hours)
Cross the border for a day at one of Europe's oldest and deepest lakes. Ohrid's medieval old town, lakeside churches, and crystal-clear water make it a UNESCO treasure. You'll need your passport.
6. Apollonia Archaeological Park (2 hours)
One of the most important ancient Greek colonies in the Adriatic. The ruins include a beautiful monastery, a restored amphitheatre, and a museum. Peaceful and rarely crowded.
7. Dajti Mountain (30 minutes + cable car)
Take the Dajti Express cable car from Tirana's outskirts to the top of Mount Dajti (1,613m). Hiking trails, horse riding, adventure park, and restaurants with panoramic city views.
8. Gjirokaster — The Stone City (3.5 hours)
A longer day trip but absolutely worth it. This UNESCO city of stone houses, a massive hilltop castle, and Cold War tunnels is one of Albania's most atmospheric places.
9. Elbasan & the Via Egnatia (1.5 hours)
Follow the ancient Roman road to Elbasan, where a 15th-century Ottoman fortress still stands in the city centre. The castle walls now surround cafes, homes, and churches — a unique living monument.
10. Shkoder & Rozafa Castle (2 hours)
Albania's cultural capital in the north, with the legendary Rozafa Castle, the beautiful Lake Skadar shoreline, and a charming pedestrian centre.
