Overview

Overview: where the country began

Vlorë (Vlora in English, Valona in Italian) sits at the exact point where the flat Adriatic ends and the dramatic Ionian Riviera begins. On 28 November 1912, Ismail Qemali raised the Albanian flag on Independence Square and declared the country free of Ottoman rule. That single moment turned a quiet Adriatic port into the symbolic heart of the nation.

Today Vlorë is a bustling university city of ~130,000 residents, Albania's fourth-largest port, and the northern gateway to the entire Albanian Riviera. Direct ferries link it to Bari, Brindisi and Ancona; a new international airport (VOA) is opening in phases through 2026; and the Italian influence in cafés, language and food runs deeper here than anywhere else on the coast. Vlorë is where the Adriatic meets the Ionian, where una Puglia più economica becomes a real slogan, and where every serious Albania trip either starts, ends or overnights.

Radhimë–Orikum coast (20–30 min south): genuine beach-resort vibe. €70–180 in season. Best if you're renting a car.

Book 2 months ahead for July–August. The Bari ferry passengers fill rooms quickly.

Overview

Where to eat

Vlorë's food is coastal Albanian with a heavy Italian accent. Along the Lungomare, sit at any peshkatore (fisherman's tavern) for the daily catch — pointing at the ice display is the correct ordering method. In the old town on Rruga Sadik Zotaj, family tavernas serve tavë kosi (baked lamb in yoghurt), pilaf, stuffed peppers. In Uji i Ftohtë, beachside grills specialise in whole grilled sea bream and bass.

Expect €12–20 per person for a proper fish dinner. Coffee culture is deep and Italian — every neighbourhood has its lokale. See our full Albanian food guide for regional context.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

1Is Vlorë the same as Valona?

Yes. Vlorë is the modern Albanian name, Vlora the English spelling, and Valona is the Italian name used continuously since Roman times. All three refer to the same city.

2How many days do I need in Vlorë?

Two full days minimum: one for the city (Independence Square, Lungomare, Kanina, dinner on the seafront) and one for the Karaburun-Sazan Marine Park boat tour. Three days lets you add a Riviera drive south over Llogara.

3Is Vlorë safe?

Yes. Very safe by European standards. Petty theft on crowded summer beaches is the only realistic risk; violent crime against tourists is essentially unheard of. Women travel solo without issues.

4Do people in Vlorë speak Italian?

Many do, especially anyone over 40 or working in tourism, cafés or ferries. Legacy of the Italian community, RAI television, and continuous cross-Adriatic movement. Italian goes further than English with older locals.

5When is the new Vlorë airport opening?

Vlorë International (VOA) is opening for European commercial traffic in phases through 2026, with routes serving Italian, German, Austrian and UK cities. Always confirm your specific route directly with the airline before booking non-refundable travel.

6Can I visit Sazan Island independently?

No. Sazan remains under partial military control and can only be visited on an officially licensed guided boat tour from Vlorë port. All authorised operators land at the same designated beach.

7Is Vlorë good for families?

Very. The Lungomare is stroller-friendly, city beaches are shallow and calm, ice cream is on every corner, and family restaurants welcome children well past midnight in the Mediterranean way.

8What is the best way to get from Bari to Vlorë?

The overnight ferry (Adria Ferries or GNV) from Bari port, boarding around 22:00 and arriving Vlorë at 07:00–08:00. Foot passenger €50–80 one way; cabin supplement €30–60. Cheaper and more scenic than flying in shoulder season.

9Is Karaburun-Sazan really worth a full day?

Yes, without hesitation. The single best sea experience in Albania and one of the least-developed marine parks in the Mediterranean. If weather cooperates, do not skip it.
