Overview: two Dhërmis, one turquoise sea
Dhërmi is really two villages stacked on top of each other. Down at sea level sits the beach strip: three kilometres of white pebbles, water so clear it reads swimming-pool turquoise on any camera, and the loudest concentration of beach clubs on the Albanian Riviera. Above it, clinging to the flank of the Ceraunian Mountains at around 200 metres of altitude, the stone hilltop old village keeps its centuries-old orthodox churches, cobbled lanes and Sunday quiet.
This split is the reason Dhërmi became Instagram-famous. The beach delivers the postcard: Caribbean water pinned against a wall of grey mountain. The old village delivers the counterweight: silence, cypresses, panoramas straight down to the coast. Between them the Mills Trail links top to bottom in about ninety minutes on foot. Add nearby Gjipe canyon, the Pirates' Cave in Grama Bay and neighbouring Palasa and Drymades, and one small dot on the map turns into a full week of coastline.
Getting to Dhërmi
From Vlorë via the Llogara Pass
40 km, about 1h on the SH8. This is the classic Riviera opener: a switchback climb to 1,027 m through pine forest, a panoramic viewpoint over the entire southern coastline, then a steady descent straight into Dhërmi. Drive it in daylight for the view. Slow in summer traffic and behind tour buses.
From Sarandë northbound on the SH8
60 km, 1h 15m. The full southern Riviera in reverse: Sarandë, Himarë, Porto Palermo, Vuno, Dhërmi. All sea views, all narrow coastal road. Petrol stations are frequent but ATMs are not; withdraw cash in Sarandë before you leave.
From Tirana as a long day drive
190 km, 3h 30m to 4h with the Llogara stop. SH8 all the way. Feasible in one day but the drive is the point, so plan the return by the same route or continue south. Rental car from TIA around €35–50/day in shoulder season.
By bus (furgon)
Two daily furgons from Tirana South Terminal to Sarandë stop at Dhërmi bridge on the highway (5h, 1,500 ALL / €15). The stop is 1.5 km above the beach, so plan a €5 taxi for the final descent. Vlorë–Dhërmi minibuses run several times a day in summer (1h, 500 ALL).

Dhërmi Beach — the main strip
Three kilometres of white pebbles and famously clear water backed by a low wall of cafés and beach clubs. The northern half stays quieter; the southern half is where the music runs from lunch until sunrise in July and August. Sunbed and umbrella €10–25 per day depending on the club.
Old village and the Mills Trail
The stone hilltop village sits 200 m above the beach. Wander the cobbled lanes, visit the Monastery of Saint Mary, and pick up the Mills Trail (Shtegu i Mullinjve): a 3 km downhill footpath past ruined water mills and centuries-old orthodox chapels that ends back at the beach. 1h 30m one way. Wear grippy shoes.
Gjipe Canyon and Gjipe Beach
The most photographed nudist-friendly beach in Albania, wedged where a wild sandstone canyon meets the sea. Reach it on foot in 25 minutes from a signed pull-off on the SH8 south of Dhërmi, or by kayak / boat taxi from Dhërmi Beach (€15 return). Bring water: there is one seasonal shack and no shade at midday.
Pirates' Cave and Grama Bay by boat
The rugged coast north of Dhërmi hides caves and coves you cannot reach by land. Half-day boat trips from Dhërmi Beach (€25–40 per person) circle the peninsula to the Pirates' Cave, swim stops in coves along the way, and end at Grama Bay with its ancient Greek and Roman inscriptions carved into the cliff.
Palasa and Drymades side beaches
Palasa, 2 km north, is the first beach you reach after descending Llogara: white pebbles, transparent water, and half the crowd of Dhërmi despite an expanding luxury-resort footprint. Drymades, immediately north of Dhërmi Beach, keeps a rustic beach-camp feel with olive-shaded restaurants and the loudest sunsets on the Riviera.
Where to stay and eat
Beach strip: three- and four-star beach hotels and rooms above the beach clubs. €80–160 in Jun/Sep, €180–350 in August, minimum stays common. Loud until late; earplugs recommended if you sleep before 2 am.
Old village: a handful of restored stone guesthouses in the hilltop old town. €55–110, quiet, sunrise views, cooler nights. You will need a car or a €5 taxi to reach the beach.
Drymades / Palasa: boutique beach camps and rising luxury resorts. Best for a mixed party plus quiet crowd.
Eat: family tavernas in the old village serve grilled lamb, tavë kosi and homemade wine. On the beach, order whole grilled fish and the local Riviera speciality, gjelle me midhje (mussel stew). Expect €15–25 per person for a proper dinner.

1Is Dhërmi expensive?
Dhërmi is the second most expensive beach in Albania after Ksamil in August, roughly on par with cheaper Croatian islands. In June or September it drops to normal Albanian Riviera prices: €60–100 per night for a decent room, €15 for dinner. August adds a 40–50% surcharge across the board.
2Which is the best beach in Dhërmi?
The northern half of the main Dhërmi Beach has the clearest water and the least crowd. For a proper hideaway walk 25 minutes south to Gjipe, or 5 minutes north to Drymades. Palasa, 2 km north, has whiter pebbles and more space but fewer facilities.
3What is Dhërmi nightlife like?
Dhërmi is the loudest strip of coast in Albania. Beach clubs on the southern half of the main beach and at Drymades run day parties from noon until sunrise all summer. Two major festivals (Kala and ION Beach) fill the town from 10–20 August with international DJ line-ups. Outside those dates and outside July–August, evenings are calm.

Two full days is the minimum: one for the beach and a boat trip to the Pirates' Cave, one for the old village, the Mills Trail and Gjipe. Three days lets you add Palasa, Drymades and a lazy sunset dinner without rushing. Longer stays turn Dhërmi into a base for the entire Riviera.
6Is the water really that clear?
Yes. Dhërmi sits on the Ionian, not the Adriatic, and has no river outflow to muddy the water. Visibility of 15–20 metres is normal in calm weather. Together with Ksamil and Karaburun-Sazan it is the clearest water on the Albanian coast.
7Can I visit Dhërmi as a day trip?
From Vlorë and Sarandë, yes: 1h to 1h 15m each way leaves five or six hours on the beach. From Tirana it works only as a very long day (four hours each way); overnight is much better. If Dhërmi is your top Riviera priority, sleep at least one night here.
8Are there ATMs and card payments in Dhërmi?
One or two ATMs on the beach road, often out of cash in August. Larger hotels, big beach clubs and the festival zones take cards; small tavernas, minibus drivers and boat operators want cash in leks or euros. Withdraw enough in Vlorë or Sarandë before arriving.
