Driving in Albania — Everything You Need to Know
Renting a car is one of the best ways to explore Albania, giving you freedom to discover hidden beaches, mountain villages, and scenic routes at your own pace. Albanian roads have improved dramatically in recent years, and while driving here has its quirks, it's perfectly manageable with a bit of preparation.
Road Conditions
Major Highways
Albania's main highways are modern and well-maintained. The A1 motorway connecting Tirana to Kosovo is excellent, and the coastal road from Vlora to Saranda has been significantly upgraded. The Tirana–Durres highway is Albania's busiest road.
Secondary & Mountain Roads
Once you leave the main highways, road quality varies. Mountain roads can be narrow, winding, and occasionally unpaved — but they lead to the most beautiful places. The road to Theth, for example, is a dramatic mountain pass best tackled with a 4x4 or high-clearance vehicle.
Traffic Rules
- Drive on the right side of the road
- Speed limits: 40 km/h in towns, 80 km/h on rural roads, 110 km/h on highways
- Headlights must be on at all times (day and night)
- Blood alcohol limit: 0.01% (effectively zero tolerance)
- Seatbelts are mandatory for all passengers
- Mobile phone use while driving is prohibited (hands-free permitted)
Licence Requirements
EU driving licences are valid in Albania. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside their national licence. Car rental companies typically require the driver to be at least 21 years old with at least one year of experience.
Fuel & Costs
Petrol stations are plentiful along main roads and in towns. Fuel costs approximately €1.50–1.70 per litre. Most stations accept cash only in rural areas, though larger chains accept cards. Always keep your tank above quarter-full in mountain areas where stations can be sparse.
Parking
Parking in Albanian cities is informal. In Tirana, paid parking zones exist in the centre (marked by blue lines). In coastal towns during summer, finding parking can be challenging — arrive early. Street parking is generally safe.
