Radhimë Beach and Orikum Illyrian Ruins

Radhimë is a small coastal village on the western side of the Vlora Bay, about 15 kilometres south of Vlora city. By car it is a 20 to 25 minute drive along the SH8 coastal road, the same road that continues on to the Llogara Pass and Dhërmi. It is the first proper Riviera style pebble cove you reach when heading south from Vlora, which is why it is such an easy add on to any trip along this coast.

Oricum is the remains of a Greek colony founded in the 5th century BC, later expanded under Roman rule, and finally fortified as an early Christian settlement. On site you can walk through a small amphitheatre cut into the hillside, sections of Roman mosaic flooring, city walls, and the outline of a basilica. It is much smaller than Butrint or Apollonia, and you should think of it as a peaceful hour and a half of walking with real historical texture rather than a full day museum visit. Its position on a marina peninsula, with the sunset over Karaburun, is what makes it memorable.

Radhimë is a pebble beach, small pale stones typical of the Albanian Riviera. Water shoes are strongly recommended, both for walking on the shingle and for the small rocks in the shallows. It is family friendly for kids who can already swim or float confidently, but the drop off after two or three metres from shore means it is not ideal for toddlers. The tavernas provide sun loungers, umbrellas, and there are clean toilets and freshwater showers.

The water at Radhimë is exceptionally clear, often with 8 to 10 metres of visibility on a calm day. The shallows extend for about two to three metres from shore, then the seabed drops away steeply to depths of 5 metres and more within a short swim. For an average swimmer this is perfectly safe and actually part of what makes the snorkelling so good. Currents inside the cove are gentle, but stay closer to shore if wind is coming from the south.

The drive from Tirana to Radhimë takes about two and a half hours in each direction on the modern SH4 motorway, with a short section of coastal road at the end. It works as a long day trip if you leave Tirana by 08:00, but it is genuinely more relaxed as an overnight in Vlora, especially in high summer when traffic on the return leg can add another 45 minutes. Many guests pair this trip with a night at a Vlora seafront hotel so the day has real breathing room.

The sweet spot is late May to mid June, and again from early September to mid October. The sea is warm enough to swim comfortably, Oricum is not baking hot, and the beach is quiet. July and August are hot and Radhimë gets busy with Albanian holidaymakers, especially on weekends, though we can still get you a good taverna table with advance booking. In November through April the sea is often too cold for swimming, but Oricum on a clear winter day is atmospheric and empty.

Lunch is not included in the base price. This is deliberate, the taverna menus at Radhimë price fresh fish by weight and it is unfair to lock guests into a fixed menu they may not want. Realistic budget for a proper seafood lunch with a glass of wine or beer is 20 to 35 euros per person, less if you go for pasta or a mixed meze. Water, coffee, and the entry ticket to Oricum, which is a modest 300 lek, are also not included in the trip price.

Italian in particular is widely understood on the Vlora coast because of the historic Bari ferry connection and satellite TV growing up.
